2/2/10- Representatives from the Big Spring Community, City of Big Spring, and Cornell Corrections join to celebrate the placement of a new totem pole at Comanche Trail Park. 1/25/10- Howard College Trustees gave special recognition this week to Howard College Baseball Coach Britt Smith. Smith was named 2009 Diamond / American Baseball Coaches Assoc. NJCAA Division I National Coach of the Year. Coach Smith, who gives all credit to a team effort, led the Hawk Baseball Team to the National Championship and a 63-1 national record breaking season in 2009. The team remains top-ranked. 12/16/09- Big Spring’s Kentwood Elementary 3rd graders show off their new dictionaries recently donated by the Big Spring Rotary Club as one of their community projects. The civic group, along with assistance from Big Spring Sonic Drive Ins and area resident Rich Anderson, donated over 480 of the new dictionaries to each 3rd grade class in Howard County.
12/17/09- At almost exactly 7 o'clock Thursday night, the Historic Hotel Settles in Downtown Big Spring lit up with white and red lights inside. Settles officials chose the colors for Christmas. This is the first time the hallways of the hotel have seen electric lighting to this extent since the early 80's. 12/07/09- Howard County Commissioners are looking at roof leaks at the courthouse, as well as the library. One of the leaks is coming through the new ceiling in the recently renovated courtroom. Commissioners recently decided to go out for bids to make over $100,000 of repairs to the roofs. (Photo KBST News)
11/24/09- 31 year old Ricardo Castillo of Big Spring was recently arrested as a suspect in several recent aggravated robberies in our community, and another that dates back to May of this year. The investigation is an ongoing collaborative effort by the Big Spring Police Department and Howard County Sheriffs Office.
11/23/09- A D.P.S. Trooper collided with an SUV Monday morning at Gregg and the FM 700 bridge intersection while on his way to investigate another accident. No one was seriously injured in this accident. (Photo KBST News)
11/20/09- Veterans Administration officials and Big Spring Mayor Russ McEwen put their shovels to the task during a recent ground breaking at the Big Spring V.A. for a new 40 bed "domiciliary" that will treat veterans for addiction disorders. The hospital has a temporary facility that already treats veterans. The domiciliary is part of the expanded mission of the Big Spring V.A. in an effort to address mental health issues for veterans, including those just returning from conflicts overseas. 11/11/09- Each year on the 11th hour on the 11th day in the 11th month, Americans celebrate our military veterans. The Big Spring community did so in a number of ways, with one of the larger events at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. 11/05/09- A Howard County Volunteer Fire Fighter knocks down the last of a small brush fire south of Big Spring Thursday afternoon. The fire only consumed several acres but threatened three homes. Officials are concerned that an abundance of dry brush going into the fall and winter months will make for a busy fire season.
